Ten Lakes Basin Explorer

An alpine basecamp journey into Yosemite’s quiet northern high country.

Tucked away in Yosemite’s northern wilderness, the Ten Lakes Basin is one of the park’s most beautiful—and surprisingly peaceful—alpine landscapes. On this five-day backpacking journey, we hike into a high basin scattered with sparkling lakes, open meadows, and expansive granite benches, where we establish a comfortable basecamp and spend several days exploring the surrounding high country. Rather than moving camp each day, this trip is designed around a slower, more immersive rhythm. After the scenic hike into the basin, we settle into a beautiful lakeside basecamp perched on warm granite slabs overlooking the lakes below. From there, our days unfold with light daypacks as we wander between the basin’s many lakes, swim in clear alpine waters, explore quiet ridgelines with sweeping views across Yosemite’s northern wilderness, and return to camp each evening as the alpenglow settles over the granite. This basecamp style allows us to experience the Ten Lakes Basin in a way most hikers never do—lingering long enough to truly settle into the landscape. There is time for swimming, photography, relaxed exploration, and simply enjoying the quiet beauty of Yosemite’s high country far from the busy valley. By the end of the trip, Ten Lakes begins to feel less like a destination and more like a temporary mountain home—a place where the days are shaped by sunlight on granite, cool alpine water, and the simple rhythm of life in the backcountry.

  • Day 1- Meet Your Guide(s) at White Wolf Campground

Our journey begins high on Yosemite’s north rim at White Wolf Campground where we will gather at 4pm for a pre-trip orientation. We will review gear, go over the route ahead, and make sure everyone has everything they need for the journey ahead. We will have our first dinner together prepared by your guide(s), and settle into camp beneath the pines. The high elevation (8,000’) helps with early acclimatization while the quiet forest setting provides a relaxed start before heading into the backcountry.

Day 2- Hike to Ten Lakes Basin

After breakfast we’ll drive a few minutes to the Ten Lakes Trailhead and begin our hike into the Yosemite high country.

The trail climbs steadily through lodgepole pine forest before reaching a broad ridge with views stretching across the northern Yosemite wilderness (highpoint 9,200’). From there we descend into the beautiful Ten Lakes Basin, where a constellation of alpine lakes spreads across polished granite and open meadows. Once camp is established there’s plenty of time to swim, explore the shoreline, or simply relax on warm granite slabs as the evening light settles over the basin.

    6 miles, Elevation +1,400, -500’

Day 3- Explore the lower lake basin

With camp established, the next two days are dedicated to exploring the basin.

Today we’ll wander through the lower lake chain, where many of the basin’s namesake lakes are clustered together. Our day may include lake hopping along granite benches, swimming in crystal-clear water, and discovering quiet viewpoints overlooking the basin. With plenty of time for photography, wildlife observation, or simply soaking in the quiet alpine landscape.

    3-5 miles, Elevation: ± 400-800’ cumulative

    Day 4- High Country Exploration

Today we’ll venture farther into the surrounding high country above Ten Lakes Basin. Possible/optional explorations include climbing nearby granite ridges for sweeping views of Yosemite’s northern wilderness, wandering through high alpine meadows, or circling additional lakes tucked into the basin’s upper reaches. These off-trail explorations showcase the quieter side of Yosemite — far from the busy valley and deep within one of the park’s most beautiful alpine basins. The afternoon leaves time to relax back at camp, swim in the lakes, or enjoy the slower pace of alpine basecamp living.

    3-6 miles, Elevation: ±800-1,200’

    Day 5- Exit the backcountry

After a final morning in the basin we’ll pack up camp and begin our hike back toward the trailhead with lighter packs. The route climbs gradually out of the basin before descending through open lodgepole forests. Along the way we’ll enjoy one last set of expansive views across Yosemite’s northern high country. By early afternoon we’ll return to the trailhead where our journey concludes.

    6 miles, Elevation: +500”, -1,400”

  • This trip is designed for hikers who want to experience Yosemite’s high country at a relaxed and immersive pace. Rather than covering long distances each day, we establish a beautiful basecamp in the Ten Lakes Basin and spend our days exploring the surrounding lakes, granite benches, and alpine ridges with light daypacks.

It’s a great fit for guests who enjoy hiking several miles per day and are comfortable carrying a backpack on the hike into and out of camp, but who also appreciate having time to swim, relax on warm granite slabs, photograph wild landscapes, and soak in the quiet rhythm of the mountains.

This trip is especially well suited for:

    • Hikers with moderate backpacking experience

    • Guests who prefer shorter daily mileage with more time to explore and relax

    • Those who love alpine lakes, swimming, and granite landscapes

    • Travelers looking for a quieter side of Yosemite away from the Valley crowds

    • Anyone curious about backpacking who wants a supportive and unhurried introduction

Participants should feel comfortable hiking 5–7 miles with a 35-45 lb. backpack and managing elevation gains of around 1,400 feet on the approach into the basin.

    ❌Evacuations

  • Unless you are willing to absorb the entire cost of your trip in the event of a cancellation or early exit, it is recommended that you obtain travel insurance to protect your investment. AWE is not liable for cancellation fees or costs pertaining to your changed or canceled flights, rentals, lodging, or other arrangements (travel insurance can cover those costs). We recommend you call and speak with agent(s) before purchasing.

Our recommendations (please do your own research to see what best suits your needs):

    • Travel Guard- travelguard.com

    • World Nomads- worldnomads.com

    • ADD Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) Coverage to your insurance plan – it’s highly recommended you add this to your policy. You often need to purchase this coverage within a short timeframe of making your reservation (typically 1-2 weeks).

    • Full Payment: Due 60 days before trip departure

    • Cancellation 60+ days before departure: 75% of deposit refunded or transferred to another trip in same season.

    • Cancellation within 60-45 days of departure: 50% of trip cost refunded or transferred to another trip in same season.

    • Cancel 45 days or less, non-refundable, non-transferable.

Cancellation policies are necessary for operating “tour-type” programs with high up-front costs and overhead. While AWE operates within industry standards and strives to be fair, there are many things are out of our control.

By their nature, backcountry adventures are uncertain endeavors. Many factors can influence the arrival to, the running of, or the outcome of an AWE program. Therefore, AWE strongly suggests obtaining “cancel for any reason” travel insurance before embarking. Weather, route conditions, or your own abilities may create circumstances that make continuing an AWE program unsafe or unwise, and you and/or your party may have to exit early. No refunds are given if a program ends early due to weather or route conditions. If this occurs your guide will offer to spend your remaining time pursuing a different or more feasible route. There is no credit for any days that go unused.

Should AWE need to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances (government closures, etc), we will offer you the opportunity to change programs, reschedule, or refund without penalty.

  • Challenge Level: Moderate

This trip is rated Moderate and is well suited for active hikers who are comfortable spending multiple days on the trail.

The primary physical challenge comes on Day 2, when we hike approximately 6 miles into Ten Lakes Basin with about 1,400 feet of elevation gain while carrying our gear and food. Once camp is established, the remaining days involve lighter day hikes with small packs and plenty of time to move at a relaxed pace.

To prepare, we recommend building a consistent routine of hiking, walking, or other aerobic activity in the weeks leading up to the trip. Ideally, guests should feel comfortable hiking 5–7 miles with a backpack weighing 35-45 pounds on trails with sustained uphill sections.

    Helpful ways to prepare include:

    • Regular hikes on local trails with gradual elevation gain

    • Walking or hiking several miles over consecutive days per week with a light pack, building towards carrying a heavy backpack

    • Stair climbing or hill workouts to strengthen legs and endurance

    • Strengthening core and lower body for balance and stability

Because this trip takes place at elevations between 8,000 and 9,800 feet, some guests may notice the effects of altitude such as shortness of breath or fatigue. Spending time at elevation before the trip, staying well hydrated, and maintaining a steady pace on the trail can help your body adjust.

    Before the Trip

In the weeks leading up to the adventure, you’ll receive:

    • A complete gear checklist
    • Pre-trip logistics and meeting details
    • A chance to connect with your guide and ask questions

Our goal is to help you arrive at the trailhead feeling prepared, confident, and excited for the journey ahead.

    Recovery & Mindset

Rest days are essential. Recovery allows your body to adapt and prevents injury.

Equally important is mental preparation. Backpacking in the Sierra requires flexibility, teamwork, and resilience. Weather changes. Trails vary. Fatigue accumulates. A positive, adaptable mindset enhances the experience for everyone.

    We’re Here to Help

If you have questions about training, altitude, or gear selection, reach out before booking. We’re happy to help you determine if this trip is a good fit and offer guidance to support your preparation.
