Nevada Falls in Yosemite national park

The Mist Trail to Vernal & Nevada Falls

Looking over the top of Nevada Falls

The Mist Trail is one of the most iconic hikes in Yosemite National Park—a powerful journey that brings you face-to-face with the force and beauty of the Merced River as it carves its way through granite. Beginning in Yosemite Valley, the trail steadily climbs through shaded forest before revealing the first views of Vernal Fall, where the river plunges over polished stone in a constant roar.

As we ascend the famous granite stairway beside the falls, you’ll feel the cool mist rising around you—especially in spring and early summer when snowmelt is at its peak. Rainbows often form in the spray, and the energy of the water is unmistakable. Reaching the top of Vernal Fall offers a moment to pause, take in the view, and watch the river continue its journey upstream.

From here, the trail continues its climb toward Nevada Fall, gaining elevation as the landscape opens into sweeping views of Liberty Cap, the surrounding granite walls, and the upper Merced River canyon. The approach to Nevada Fall is equally dramatic, with the river accelerating toward its final 594-foot drop. Standing at the top, you’re rewarded with expansive views and a deeper sense of Yosemite’s scale and raw power.

This hike is both physically engaging and deeply rewarding—combining steady elevation gain with some of the most dynamic scenery in the Sierra. With a knowledgeable guide, you’ll move at a comfortable pace while gaining insight into the geology that shaped these cliffs, the seasonal rhythms of the river, and the natural history that brings this landscape to life. It’s a classic Yosemite experience—elevated through connection, understanding, and time spent immersed in this awe-inspiring landscape..
