Ethan Atkins

Lead Wilderness Guide

Ethan grew up along California’s Central Coast, where early days spent exploring outside sparked a lifelong connection to the natural world. Behind his childhood home stood a steep hill — almost a small cliff — that captured his imagination. The summit remained a mystery, and Ethan made countless attempts to reach it, sometimes recruiting his younger sister to join the adventure. The day he finally stood at the top felt like solving a piece of a lifelong puzzle — a moment that planted the seed for a life spent exploring new places and seeking out the next horizon.

Not long after, his father began sharing stories about climbing in Yosemite and pointing out tiny climbers moving across the granite walls. Ethan was immediately captivated. The idea of those immense cliffs and the people climbing them felt almost mythic — and he knew that someday he wanted to be up there too. Yosemite would eventually become one of the places where that early sense of wonder truly came alive: splitter granite, warm sunshine, and clear Sierra swimming holes.

Ethan later followed his passion for the outdoors to Prescott College in Arizona, where he earned a degree in Adventure Education. Since then, he has guided more than 1,000 people into wild places, helping them build skills, pursue personal goals, and deepen their connection to the natural world.

Today, the High Sierra remains one of the landscapes he feels most connected to — a place he describes as the center of the universe. When he’s not guiding in the Sierra, Ethan leads summit climbs on Mount Shasta and teaches in the Monterey public school system during the off-season.

Naturally curious and endlessly enthusiastic about the world around him, Ethan loves sharing natural history and philosophy on the trail. Whether discussing alpine ecology, big life questions, or simply sitting quietly beside a mountain lake, he believes the wilderness offers space for everyone to connect in their own way. For Ethan, guiding is about creating space for curiosity, discovery, and the quiet magic that happens when people spend time in wild places. He looks forward to sharing this amazing place with you.
