Alex Dixon
Wilderness Guide
Alex is a wilderness guide, outdoor educator, and environmental scientist whose life has been shaped by wild places, moving water, and a deep commitment to environmental stewardship. He grew up in Colorado scrambling up 14ers, skiing, and hammocking in the Flatirons before moving to Santa Barbara to study hydrogeology, where he fell in love with the Pacific Ocean, the Sierra Nevada, and California’s rugged landscapes.
Alex’s worldview is guided by a strong environmental consciousness and a belief that first-hand experiences in nature can change the way people see themselves and the world around them and is one of the most important ways to save both the planet and ourselves. His work has taken him from guiding kayak trips in Channel Islands National Park and teaching environmental science in Ventura schools to his current work with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, where he is committed to protecting threatened ecosystems from collapse and and restoring watersheds he lives and recreates in. Part of his latest work is rescuing endangered salmonids with a taser backpack!
As a restoration professional, Alex brings a sense of gratitude, curiosity, and caretaking into his guiding. He loves helping guests move through challenge, deepen their connection to place, and discover the joy, resilience, and responsibility that come with time spent outdoors. Whether exploring snowy peaks, arid deserts, alpine trails, or emerald sea caves, Alex encourages immersive experiences rooted in stewardship and wonder.
At Axis Wild, Alex enjoys sharing his environmental knowledge with curious guests and helping create trips that leave people with a stronger sense of self, place, and connection. He is always happy to talk geology, dam removal, watersheds, and fish. His superpower, and Achilles heel, is the ability to never get full, no matter how big the meal. When he’s not guiding or working in the field, you can find him writing poems, bushwhacking through Los Padres, and playing in the ocean.
